Some festivals are not just meant to be explained — they have to be lived. The Bear Festival in Prats de Molló is one of them. A couple of weeks ago, I had the chance to be there, walking through its streets with my camera in hand and experiencing firsthand a celebration that feels intense, authentic, and deeply rooted in the place where it belongs.

From the very first moment, you realize this is not just any local festival. In Prats de Molló, tradition is alive. You can feel it in the streets, in the people, in the tension of the moment, and in that unique energy created when an entire town lives a celebration it truly feels part of.

The Bear Festival is one of the most emblematic traditions in Vallespir and keeps alive an ancestral symbolism linked to the end of winter and the arrival of spring. The bear — a wild, powerful animal — takes center stage in a celebration that blends ritual, popular performance, and a strong connection to local identity.

In Prats de Molló, this is not experienced as a staged event for visitors. It is lived as a genuine expression of popular culture. And that is probably what makes it so special: the feeling that everything happening has meaning, memory, and soul.

Experiencing it firsthand

Being there in the middle of it all completely changes the way you understand it. Photos or videos may help you imagine the atmosphere, but nothing compares to being in those streets, surrounded by people, sudden runs, tension, and expectation.There are moments when everything seems suspended, and then suddenly movement erupts. People run, step aside, look behind them, search for a way out, and you try to keep up with everything happening right in front of you at an incredible speed. It is a celebration that keeps you constantly alert, because everything can change in seconds, and because the distance between the crowd and the action almost disappears. That closeness is exactly what makes such a strong impression. You do not experience it from the outside. You experience it from within.

The challenge of photographing the festival

From a photography perspective, it was a fascinating challenge. The Bear Festival demands speed, intuition, and constant attention. The pace of the action, the density of the crowd, the movement everywhere, and the need to anticipate what is about to happen make every image feel like an instinctive decision.It is not only about capturing what is happening, but about trying to stay one step ahead of the moment. Looking for expressions, glances, gestures, movement, tension, faces, hands, and motion. Trying to freeze an energy that is hard to explain unless you have actually been there. That is why, more than photographing a festival, it felt like trying to capture an atmosphere. A collective force. A living tradition. And that is probably one of the things that attracted me most as a photographer: nothing was arranged for the camera, yet everything had visual strength.

Living and deeply rooted popular culture

One of the things that impressed me most was how deeply rooted this festival is within the community. It is not just another festive date on the calendar. It is a tradition that remains alive because people truly feel it belongs to them, pass it on, and live it intensely.In Prats de Molló, popular culture is not only memory — it is also present. It is in the streets, in the involvement of the people, in the way the festival transforms the town, and in the symbolic strength it still carries. You can feel that in every detail.

And no, the bear did not catch me

And no, in the end, the bear did not catch me.Still, it passed right in front of me more than once. Close enough that, in one of the most intense moments, it even stained my arms. It was one of those moments that later makes you smile, even though while it is happening your adrenaline is at its highest.I came back with many photographs, but above all with the feeling of having lived something truly authentic — the kind of experience you do not just document, but one that stays with you. And I think that is what makes the Bear Festival in Prats de Molló so special: you do not just watch it, you live it.
